Why do many digital transformation projects fail?
- so complex - multi-year
- employees don’t use
- hard to fully implement
Why is managing information resources difficult and complex?
very expensive to acquire, operate, and maintain
What is the difference between data, information, and knowledge
What is a transaction processing system?
processes transaction data from terminal - checkout POS system
What is enterprise resource planning?
integrates all functional areas of the organization
ex:
- Workday
- SAP
- Oracle
What is functional areas IS?
Supports the activities within specific functional area
ex:
- system for processing payroll (specifically HR functions)
What is decision support sustem?
provides access to data and analysis tools
ex:
- “What if” analysis of changes in budget
What is expert system?
mimics human expert in a particular areas and makes decisions
ex:
- credit card approval analysis
What are dashboards?
present structured, summarized information about aspects of business important to executives
ex:
- status of sales by product
- excel –> provides structured and organized information
What is a supply chain management system?
manages flows of products, services, and information among organizations
ex:
- walmart retail link system connecting suppliers to walmart

What is electronic commerce system?
enables transactions among organizations and between organizations and customers
