social control
Use of various methods to persuade/ force individuals to conform to the dominant social norms + values
Formal social control
Carried out by agencies of social control specifically set up to ensure people conform to written rules in society
Informal social control
Carried out by institutions whose primary purpose is not social control

Behaviour which is against law
Deviance
Behaviour which fails to conform to norms of a particular society
Societal deviance
Socially unacceptable acts
Situational deviance
acts defined as deviant in a particular context
Moral entrepreneurs
Institutions within society that have the power and resource to impose their own definitions of criminal behaviour (e.g police )
Primary deviance
Insignificant acts that have not been publically labelled e.g stealing
Secondary deviance
Deviance that follows once a person has been publicly labelled as deviant
Master status
Society interprets all acts and motives within the context of the label - becomes persons main title
Phenomenology
Study of the 1st hand human experience and is a subjective line of study. It is the belief that society is a human construction
Typifications
Officers decisions to arrest are influenced by the stereotypes they hold
Right realists
Conservative/ traditional approach
Tougher on criminals than the causes of crime
Left realists
Take the approach of ‘tough on crime’ and on the causes of crime
