What is a ‘case’?
A subject, item or individual for which data is collected
What is a ‘variable’?
Any characteristic measured on the case
What are the two overarching types of variables?
Numerical and categorical
What are the two subtypes of numerical variables?
Continuous and discrete
What are the two subtypes of categorical variables?
Ordinal and nominal
What is a continuous variable?
A type of numerical variable with an endless amount of possible values
What is a discrete variable?
A type of numerical variable with a limited amount of values
What is an ordinal variable?
A type of categorical variable who’s categories have order
What is a nominal variable?
A type of categorical variable who’s categories have no order
What is an example of a continuous variable?
Height 1.66m, 1.78m, 1.84m etvc.
What is an example of a discrete variable?
Number of siblings - 0, 1, 2 etc.
What is an example of an ordinal variable?
Clothes sizing - small, medium, large etc.
What is an example of a nominal variable?
Hair colour - blonde, brown, red etc.
What chart is used for nominal data?
Pareto chart
What chart is used for ordinal data?
Bar chart
