Q

How do you do an empirical formula?

A

% (or mass depending on question)
÷ Ar
÷ smallest
ratio

eg.
A hydrocarbon is made of 85.7% carbon, find its empirical formula:

% C= 85.7, H=14.3
÷ Ar - C= 85.7 / 12 = 7.1417, H= 14.3/1 = 14.3
÷ smallest - C= 7.1417 / 7.1417 = 1, H = 14.3/7.1417 = 2
ratio - CH2

Q

How do you do a molecular formula?

A
Do the empirical formula first
(Mr given / Mr of the empirical compound) * the numbers of the compound
eg.
Empirical is CH2, Mr given is 42.
42 / 14 (C is 12 and H2 is 2) = 3
CH2 * 3 = C3H6
