Topic 1 Flashcards
How is wave number calculated?
1 divided by wavelength(lamda)
What is the formula involving wavelength
E = LHC/wavelength
What happens when energy is transferred to atoms?
Electrons within the atoms may be promoted to higher energy levels
What is atomic spectroscopy?
When an electron have been promoted to a higher energy level, the promoted electron is then unstable, and falls back down to the lower level. As it does so, it emits a photon of light energy.
What is atomic emission spectroscopy
An emission spectrum of a sample is produced by measuring the intensity of light emitted at different wave lengths.
What is atomic absorption spectroscopy?
An absorption spectrum is produced by measuring how the intensity of absorbed light varies with wavelength
