Topic 1 (1)- Cell biology Flashcards
What cells are eukaryotic?
Plant and animal cells
What cells are prokaryotic?
Bacteria cells
What is a nucleus?
Contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell.
What is cytoplasm?
Gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions.
What is cell membrane?
Holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out.
What is the mitochondria?
This is where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration take place.
What are ribosomes?
Where the proteins are made in the cell.
What subcellular structures are in animal cells?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, ribosomes.
What is a cell wall?
It supports the cell and strengthens it.
What does a permanent vacuole do?
Contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugar and salts.
What does a chloroplast do?
Where photosynthesis occurs, they contain chlorophyll which absorbs light for photosynthesis.
What subcellular structures appear in plant cells?
Everything in a animal cell, cell wall, permanent vacuole and chloroplast.
What is a plasmid?
Small ring of DNA
Does a bacteria cell have a nucleus?
No, instead they have a single circular strand of DNA that flows freely in the cytoplasm.
What subcellular structures appear in a bacteria cell?
Cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, single strand of DNA, plasmids.
