Q

characteristics of a power/controlling killer

  • seen as a master to victim
  • motives drive by a need for power or dominance
24
Q

evaluation-weakness

why does the top down approach only work on some crimes?

A
  • only works on a crime that has a wealth of information on the offender
  • common burglary or damage to property doesnt fit into the categories
25
Q

what types of crime does the top down approach work on

A
  • rape
  • arson
  • cult killing
  • sadistic torture
  • dissection
  • acting out fantasies
26
Q

evalutaion- weakness

why does the top down profiling have weak validity

A
  • Alison [02] says the approach is based on static old models of personality so it is likely to have weak validity when it comes to identifying suspects and predicting their next move
27
Q

evaluation-weakness

why does evidence not support the idea of a disorganised offender ?

A
  • Canter [04] used a method of small space analysisof 100 murderes in the US. they were assesed on 39 traits suggesting therr is likely to be an organised type but not a disorganised type of offender
  • regardless professional profilers still use the top down approach
28
Q

evaluation-weakness

why is the topdown profiling too simple ?

REDUCTIONIST

A
  • says killer types can overlap so they’re not mutually exclusive
  • Holmes [89] suggested the 5 types of serial killers
  • Walters[99] suggests focusing on a different motivations that killers have and not their specific type
29
Q

evaluations -weakness

wgat are the methodological problems woth the top down profiling

A
  • origin sample is too small
  • typology appraoch was developed using 36 US killers ,25 of which were serial
  • this is a very small and unrepresentative sample
  • Canter says self report data from convicyted in a classification system is unrelaible - becaise they suffer from mental illnesses and personality disorders
