Q

Why should concurrent admin of azithromycin and Mg- / Al- containing antacids be avoided?

A

Azithromycin’s effectiveness may be reduced when taken with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, as suggested by a study on 10 healthy volunteers. While the clinical significance of this interaction is uncertain, caution is advised. It is recommended not to take azithromycin simultaneously with aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids. While the resource doesn’t explicitly mention magnesium supplements, it would be wise to take them at different times to minimize potential interactions.
