Q

What is post-op ileus, and how can it me treated? What about paralytic ileus?

A

When a patient has a functional inhibition of bowel motility usually post-op it resolves on its own in 2-3 days but it can last longer (paralytic ileus) in which case treatment is necessary

Treat with decreasing the sympathetic tone that was elevated due to stress and surgery. Use counterstrain anterior T10, chapmans pt peristalsis inferior to the ASIS, and perform a mesenteric lift: starting with descending colon and working to the ascending.
