Toothwear and occlusion Flashcards
why is occlusion important?
Risk of fracture/ wear/ failure of restorations with wrong occlusion
What can the periodontal ligament detect
materials between teeth down to half the thickness of human hair
What important 3 elements does the occlusion have?
ridge, cusp tip, shape
What is meant by occlusal contacts?
why is it important to mark the occlusal contacts before starting work?
to ensure the occlusal contacts are the same after work, so occlusion and bite doesn’t change
What is the conformation approach?
To make the same contact points as before
What can the index teeth show?
Whether the occlusion in the patient has changed
What is other names for static occlusion
Intercuspal position (iCP), maximum intercuspation
What is meant by static occlusion?
The occlusion the paitent makes when they fir teeth together
What is meant by dynamic occlusion/ lateral excursion?
The sideways movement of the mandible from a centric position
What can be used to look at a patients occlusion?
articulating paper (thinnest the better)
What is a T scan
electronic sensor to register a bite- shows the pressure that is exerted in each point of contact
When using articulating paper what should you always do?
The papers must be placed simultaneously on two sides Thin paper should be used Use miller forceps, they grip the entire length of paper Teeth should be fully dried
What does a dark ring shape bulge mean after using articulating paper?
high pressure contact point
upper palatal and lower buccal cusps are ….
functional
