Q

What are transitional dentures?

A

Temporary dentures, which can be used to increase OVD when there is poor posterior support.

They act to prop open the bite and allow for space to create restorations.

Q

What are the benefits of transitional dentures?

A

Patient can wear for a few months to see if they can cope with dentures, and an increased OVD. You can then make the defentive denture to that OVD and restore away.

Q

What are the benefits/drawbacks of metal backed dentures?

A

Metal overlaying heavy contact points. Good retention and resistant to bruxism. Often well tolerated.

Very technically demanding, requires wax trial of teeth before making the CoCr. Won’t be able to alter them once chrome is cast.
