Tooth Morphology Notation Flashcards
How many sets of teeth do humans have in their lifetime and what are they called?
2 sets:
Deciduous
Permanent
What are the 4 basic teeth type?
- Incisor
- Canines
- Premolars
- Molars
Name a characteristic of incisors
They have a horizontal incisal edge
Name a characteristic of canines
They have a single large cusp
Name a characteristic of pre molars
Have 2 cusps of varying sizes
They are not found in deciduous teeth
Name a characteristic of molars
Have 4 or 5 cusps
What are cusps?
Chisel like edge on occlusal surface of tooth
How many teeth are there in a deciduous dentation?
20
Which teeth are found in the deciduous dentation?
2 upper and lower central incisors on both left and right side
1 upper and lower canine on both left and right side
2 upper and lower molarson both left and right side
So 20 in total
How many teeth are there in a permanent dentation?
32
Which teeth are found in the permanent dentation?
2 upper and lower incisors on both sides
1 upper and lower canine on both sides
2 upper and lower premolars on both sides
Upto 3 upper and lower molars on both sides
What are the main differences between permanent and deciduous dentition?
Permanent dentition has 2 upper and lower pre molars on both sides deciduous dentition doesn’t
How do we split the dentition?
Into 4 quadrants;
Upper right
Upper left
Lower left
Lower right
What are the 3 main systems for tooth classification?
- The full anatomical name
- Alphanumeric/ Zsigmondy system
- FDI system
How would you classify a tooth using the full anatomical name?
You’d give the tooth’s:
1. Position (Maxillary or mandibular)
2. The side (left or right)
3. The relative position (Lateral, central, 1st etc)
4. The dentition (deciduous or permanent)
5. Tooth type (incisors etc)
