Tooth morphology Flashcards
What is the occlusal shape of the maxillary central incisor?
Large trapezoid Crown large in proportion to the root Triangular Straight incisal edge Straight medial surface Taller than lateral
What are the roots shaped like in central maxillary?
One large, tapered root with triangular cross section
What is the occlusal shape of the mandibular central incisor?
Symmetrical narrow trapezoid
Smaller than lateral incisor
Small convex cingulum
Straight incisal edge
What are the roots shaped like in the mandibular central incisor?
Single, narrow, conical root which is flattened mesio-distally
What are differences between the central incisor and lateral incisor?
Root is fatter and shorter than lateral
Crown taller than lateral
Central has a larger cingulum
What are the differences between the maxillary and mandibular central incisors?
Root is thinner in mandible
Tooth is narrower of the mandible
Root of maxillary is rounded triangular and tapered, mandibular is conical and narrower
Cingulum is well defined in maxillary not mandibular
What is the occlusal shape of the maxillary lateral incisor?
Blade shaped
Crown is smaller and more rounded
Narrower mesio-distally
Shorter than central
What is the occlusal shape of the mandibular lateral incisor?
Narrow trapezoid
Incisal edge wider than central
Fan shaped
Crown is larger than mandibular central
What is the root outline of maxillary lateral incisor?
Single root, narrow, oval and tapered to a point, root is thinner than maxillary central
What is the root outline of mandibular lower incisor?
Single narrow conical root which curves distally, flattened mesio-distally
What are the differences between the central and lateral mandibular incisors?
Root slightly wider, longer and thicker than mandibular central incisors
What are the differences between maxillary and mandibular lateral incisors?
Maxillary have a more distinct lingual anatomy and more grooves, maxillary have a wider mesio-distal diameter than labial lingual whilst mandibular have a wider labial lingual than mesio-distal
What is the shape of the maxillary canine?
Large irregular pentagon
Wedge shaped mesial distally
Greater labio palatal bulk than any other tooth
Which tooth has the greatest labio palatal bulk than any other tooth?
Maxillary canine
What is the root of the maxillary canine?
Single large conical root with rounded triangular cross section.
Longest in any tooth, root may bend distally
Which tooth has the longest conical root?
Maxillary canine
What is the shape of the mandibular canine?
Long pentagon shape, crown is generally smaller and narrower mesio-distally
What is the cusp form of the mandibular canine?
Incisal ridge divided into mesial and distal slopes . Shorter more horizontal medial slope meets the longer, steeper distal ridge to form an obtuse angle at the cusp tip. Tip more lingually placed than maxillary canine.
Distal convex
Mesial surface straight line
Labial surface concave
What is the root form of the mandibular canine?
Single long root with oval cross section, flattened mesiodistally
What is the difference between mandibular and maxillary canine?
- Larger crown in maxillary
- Longer root in maxillary
- Bulky cingulum maxillary
- Less developed and lower cingulum in mandibular
What is the outline form of the maxillary first premolar?
Angular occlusal outline, with broad mesio-distal shoulder to the large buccal cusp compared to small palatal cusp, crown is wider on buccal side
