Tooth ID & Structure Flashcards
What’s Odontology?
The study of growth, anatomy and disease of teeth
Dentition
Sets of Teeth
Approximately how many primary or deciduous dentition?
20 Teeth
Approximately how many permanent or succedaneous dentition?
32 Teeth
What happens at 6 months old?
Teeth buds began to erupt in the mouth to form the primary dentition
What happens at 2-3 years old?
All of the 20 primary teeth will have erupted
What happens at age 6-12 years of age?
All primary teeth are lost and replaced with permanent dentition
What happens at age 5-6?
Permanent teeth begin to erupt
Mastication
Chewing of food
What happens at 17-20 years of age?
Eruption continues replacing primary teeth when the 3rd molars or wisdom teeth erupt
What do 5-12 year olds usually have?
Have mixed dentition (baby and parent teeth)
Crown
Visible in the mouth, protected by enamel (teeth we see when smile)
Root
Section of the tooth below the gum line, covered on the outside by a tissue called cementum
Cervix
Where crown meets cementum covering the root
Apex
Tip of the root of the tooth (apical foramen, where nerves and blood enter the tooth)
Enamel
Hardest Body Tissue, covers the Crown (made up of calcium and phosphorus)
Cementum
Covers outside of the root (like enamel just on bottom of tooth)
Dentin
Main bulk of tooth, located under the enamel and cementum of the root, softer than bone enamel but harder than bone)
Pulp
Soft inner area of the tooth
Periodontium
Structures that surround and support teeth (keeps it in place for ex. when you bite something)
Alveolar Process/ridge
surrounds roots and has sockets
Periodontal Ligament
Supports the tooth in the socket
Gingiva/Gums
Surrounds the cervix
Incisors
Front and center of the mouth, broad sharp edge (used to cut it bite food (1st 4 teeth)
