TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES- MARKING OUT ON WOOD Flashcards
What are the flat faces and straight edges called?
FACE SURFACE
FACE EDGE
Where does measuring and marking out on wood begin?
UNLESS an irregular shape, making on wood begins from a FLAT FACE and a STRAIGHT EDGE
How are face edges and face sides created on a rough piece of wood?
By smoothing with a plane - unless this is done there is nowhere to measure from
What do you mark out on wood with?
A pencil but some other tools are also used
What is a marking knife used for?
To cut lines on wood, usually across the grain, as a guide for sawing if chiselling. The cut also leaves a clean edge afterwards.
What is usually done before a marking knife is used?
Light marking out with a pencil.
How can you make the cut line more visible?
Pencil over the cut line.
What is a marking gauge?
A marking gauge is used to mark out lines parallel to an edge ALONG the grain of wood.
What does the marking gauge have that makes a small groove?
An adjustable STOCK and a pin.
Why must you keep the stock pressed firmly against the edge of the wood on a marking gauge?
Otherwise the pin may be guided by the grain and not the user.
What can you put your wood work in to keep it steady?
A vice.
What is a cutting gauge?
Similar to a marking gauge, but has a small knife instead of a pin.
What it a cutting gauge used for?
A cutting gauge is used to make parallel cut marks across the grain.
What is a try square?
A try square is used to rule lines with a pencil or knife at 90 degrees to an edge. It is also used for checking that one edge is 90 degrees to another.
How would you use a try square?
By placing the try square on your work and hold both to the light.
