Tools and Processes Flashcards
Name a saw for wood, plastics and for cutting curves
- Tenon saw
- hacksaw
- Coping saw - curves in woods and plastics
What is a bench plane
Angled blade that shaved off thin layers to shape
What can you use to make a pilot hole (planning)
A bradawl or centre punch for metals
Name the three types of drill
A brace, hand drill or power drill
What drill bit is used to make flat bottomed holes
Flat bit
What is a stationary saw called
A saw bench or circular saw
What is the small saw in skl called
The band saw
What do u use in school to drill holes?
Pillar drill
What do u use to turn and cut wood ect
A lathe. Engineers’ lathe is for metal
What is used to reduce the thickness of a material
A planner or thicknesser
What is the sander in school called
Disc sander
What is used to remove metal and has a wheel
A bench grinder
What is used to remove layers at a time and is v accurate
A milling machine
What can be used to bend metal
A hug or former, or heat
What is laminating
Glueing strips of wood together then putting them in a jig
What can be used to fold plastics
A line Bender of strip heater
What is press moulding
Slug of thermosetting plastic powder put into female mould. Former pushed into it. Very high temperatures and pressures liquefy the powder turning it into a permanent shape
What is strength?
The ability to withstand forces without breaking
What is hardness
Ability to withstand scratches, denting ect
What is plasticity
Can change shape permanently
What is brittle
Can withstand stretching. If brittle will crack like glass rather than change shape
What is toughness
If tough, a material can absorb impacts without breaking.
What are ferrous metals
Metals containing iron, are magnetic but can rust.
Name some types of ferrous metals 4
Milf steel, medium carbon steel, high carbon steel and cast iron
