PERSPECTIVE WARP

A

Selected via the edit menu this mode allows flexible adjustment in different parts of the image.

Start in layout mode by drawing planes to match the current perspective of the photograph or area of the photograph you wish to edit. Multiple planes can be added for more individual adjustments or to lock areas. Snapping one grid to another creates corners.

Once layout is complete toggle to warp in the options bar and manipulate perspective using the corner pins. Shift clicking on a line will lock it vertically or horizontally.

MARQUEE TOOLS

A

Activated by M

These tools allow simple selections to be made in Rectangle, Circle and single lines.

They will select whatever portion of the image is inside them or outside if using select > invert.

alt and shift keys can be used to constrain shape and centre like other shapes but must be held down after starting the drag.

shift + begin drag = add new selection to existing
alt + begin drag = remove selection from existing

These behaviours can also be toggle on or off via the buttons on the options bar

holding down space while drawing a marquee will allow it to be reposition whilst drawing

After drawing a selection it can be transformed like any other image by selecting Transform selection from the select menu option.

MAGIC WAND

A

Activated by W

Allows selection via finding closely matching color and contrast and automatically adding to a selection.

Tolerance - This defines how loosely or closely matching colours and contrast need to be to be added larger numbers mean the selection will be broader

Contiguous - Toggling this on means that once an edge of a strong contrast is detected the selection will stop. Toggle off to allow for wider selections i.e. inside circles etc. However be wary of other parts of the image becoming selected.

Sample All Layers - Controls weather or not the tool references just the layer selected or everything underneath.

QUICK SELECTION TOOL

A

Activated by W

This tool operates like a brush and can be scaled similarly. By default it adds to the selection as you paint around the objects you wish to be selected so there is no need to hold down shift. alt can be used to remove from the selection though.

Otherwise it performs similarly to the Magic Wand but with better edge detection

POLYGONAL LASSO TOOL

A

Activated by L

Works like the Lasso tool but is drawn using clicks to create control points around polygonal objects with defined edges and planes. In this respect it is similar to drawing a path with the pen tool but Bezier options are not available.

Like other selection tools shift and alt can be used to add or remove from the selection.

Q

MAGNETIC LASSO TOOL

A

Activated by L

A bit of a hybrid between polygonal lasso and quick select. it acts like a brush using size to influence the are it searches for edge detection but otherwise draws a line around shapes using control points. Unlike the polygonal lasso it will attempt to detect edges.

Like other selection tools shift and alt can be used to add or remove from the selection.

COLOR RANGE SELECTION

A

More of an edit mode than a tool this is accessed via the select menu.

Allows for selections to be based on colour ranges. This can be made manually using the eyedropper or from predetermined ranges from the drop down.

Fuzziness works in a similar way to tolerance using the magic wand tool to adjust how tight or broad the selection range is.

Like other selection tools shift and alt can be used to add or remove from the selection.

Q

FOCUS AREA SELECTION

A

Similar to Color Range Selection this editing pane is accessed from the select menu and allows selection of areas via the degree to which they are in focus.

The in focus range slider controls the initial range in the selection and then the add and remove focus area brushes can be used to refine.

Like other selection tools shift and alt can be used to add or remove from the selection.

17
Q

SELECT and MASK (Refine Edge)

A

Like Focus and Color selection this is an editing pane rather than a tool. It can be accessed via the select menu or via clicking select and mask from the options bar when using any of the other selection tools.

It offers an editing space for refining the edges of selections. The edges are denoted by painting over with the selection brush and then a variety of effects such as edge refine, feather, shift and opacity can be applied via sliders.

Like other selection tools the edge brush can be increased and decreased in size and holding shift or alt will switch between add and remove respectively.

18
Q

History Brush

A

Activated by J

This brush allows fine tuning of history states by reverting the painted areas back to a pre selected state in history. It is useful when the file has been stepped back in history but you preferred an edit from a later adjustment on a particular area.

The brush can be adjusted using the normal brush commands and the state you wish to revert to is targeted by the check boxes along the side of the history pallet.

19
Q

HEALING BRUSHES

A

Healing brushes are activated by the J Key.

The healing brushes will analyse the area you are painting and sample from around it to try and blend sampled details into the image, creating a seamless removal of objects where possible. There are two versions -

SPOT HEALING BRUSH - This brush use CC’s content aware fill technology to sample and blend in one brush stroke. This is the quickest tool to use but might struggle with hard edged transitions.

HEALING BRUSH - This tool uses the content aware blending like the spot healing brush but allows you to select the target sample for blending. This is done prior to painting by holding down the alt key and clicking on the sample area. A predefined pattern can also be set in the options bar rather than an image sample.

20
Q

CONTENT AWARE FILL

A

Content aware fill is at the heart of most healing brushes and the technology can be selected from the menu bar if available.

It can however be used as standalone option for filling selections etc.

  • Making a selection and then selecting Edit > Fill and selecting the content aware option. It is best to use a layer mask to limit the content search area in this case.
  • Using the Edit > Content Aware Fill Command. This opens a dedicated panel where by the resulting blend can be refined, the content search area modified and the output set to a new layer for non destructive editing.
21
Q

PATCH TOOL

A

Selected via the j key the patch tool allows for a selection to be made which is then dragged to an area you wish to be used to sample from. The resulting sample patch is blended over the original patch.

Traditional blended patterns or content aware technology can be selected from the options on the menu bar.

Reversing patches or filling with pattern options are also available in the menu bar.

22
Q

CONTENT AWARE SCALE

A

Activated by alt + shift + ctrl + c

A bounding box is created around the selected layer allowing for the image to be stretched or scaled and the new areas filled.

Focus is maintained on preservation of what is perceived to be foreground dimensions whilst scaling the background.

Selecting the man icon in the menu bar will enhance body & skin detection and for more protection from subject distortion pre-saved masks can be loaded in via the menu bar.

23
Q

CONTENT AWARE MOVE

A

Activated by J

This tool allows for a selection made either by the tool, or with other selection tools beforehand, to be copied or moved on the screen using content aware fill.

Selecting move from the drop down in the menu bar will move the object and fill the selected area whereas extend will duplicate the image and try to blend the copy at the new location.

24
Q

DODGE and BURN

A

Activated by 0

The dodge and burn tools are reminiscent of old printing techniques to lighten and darken areas of an image.

Dodge lightens, Burn Darkens.

With both you have the option to control brush size and hardness as well as the strength of the exposure.

The targeted luminance levels can also be selected from Highlights, Midtones, Shadows in the options bar.

The tools can be used directly but it is better to use on a 50% grey layer above set to Overlay or Light. This means that the original is unaffected and the edits can be decreased in intensity by reducing layer opacity.

25
Q

CLONE STAMP

A

Activated by J key

The clone stamp takes a sample from a user selected area and paints over the new brushed area.

Samples are tragetted by holding down alt and clicking in the desired location. Clicking alinged in the menu bar will keep the selection and new area aligned so you can change posions but continue to paint a perfect reproduction.

The Clone Stamp does not apply any blending so this must be modified by using brush size, hardness, opacity and flow.

Opening the clone source pallet allows for 5 different clone source selections activated by the 5 buttons across the top. These can be within the working document or from inside other open documents. There are also options to scale the sample and flip it horizontally and vertically in this pallet.

Clone stamp can be combined with the vanishing point filter to retouch in perspective.

26
Q

TEXT TOOL

A

Activated by T

Click anywhere and enter text for single line text

Click and drag to create a text area

Horizontal / Vertically orientated type can be toggled using the switch to the left of the options bar.

Size can be adjusted in the text pallet, on the options menu or by ctrl + to increase size and ctrl - to decrease size.

Once completed you must commit text by

  • Clicking the tick in the options menu
  • Pressing escape and choosing commit to text.
  • Selecting another tool by icon
  • Pressing ctrl + Enter

Fill colour of selected text can be changed quickly using the fill foreground/background colour keyboard shortcuts.

27
Q

ADJUSTING TEXT IN CHARACTER PALLET

A

Character pallet can be use to alter text in numerous ways.

Font Size Style, Weight & Colour

Leading (distance between lines of text)
Tracking (distance between all characters in text block)
Kerning (Setting distance between individual characters)

alt + up/down/right/left can be used to adjust leading and tracking respectively when any text is highlighted.

Character also gives access to all the Capital, Subscript and strike through options.

Both Paragraph and character styles can be saved in the Character and Paragraph Styles Pallets for later use. Any changes made to a style will alter all instances of it in a document.

Character and Paragraph Styles can also be loaded in from another document using the load — styles option in the pallet menu.
