- FILIFORM: smallest and most numerous; all over tongue; no taste buds
- FUNGIFORM: mostly on tip and scattered among the filiform papillae
- CIRCUMVALLATE: largest papillae; 7-9; in V shape; separates tongue body from tongue root

- COMES FROM RED BUT IT’S HEAVY AND DARKER THAN RED
- HEAT CONCENTRATES AND ACCELERATES MOVEMENT OF BLOOD
- INDICATIONS: HEAT SYNDROMES!
- EXOGENOUS FEBRILE DISEASES (IE FEVER, INFLAMMATION FROM BACTERIAL INFECTION)
- YIN DEFICIENCY/EXHAUSTION: DRY AND SMALL WITHOUT COATING
- BLOOD STAGNATION: WITH PURPLE COLOR
