What is sarcasm?
Is a form of verbal irony where one says the opposite of what they mean
Commonly used in everyday conversation and literature.
“Oh, fantastic. Just what I needed – another bill in the mail.”
The sarcasm comes from the contrast between the positive word “fantastic” and the negative situation of receiving another bill. The tone implies the opposite of what is being said; the speaker is clearly not happy about getting another bill.
What is irony?
A powerful tool used in literature and film to convey a meaning that is opposite to the literal meaning.
Can create humor or provoke thought.
“The fire station burned down last night.”
This is ironic because a fire station’s primary purpose is to prevent and extinguish fires. The unexpected and contradictory nature of it burning down creates the irony.

Anything that is related to or characterized by emotion
Emotive language is often used to elicit feelings.
“A wave of despair washed over her as she watched the last train pull away, leaving her stranded and alone on the deserted platform.”
This sentence evokes feelings of sadness, loneliness, and helplessness in the reader through words like “despair,” “stranded,” and “deserted.” The description of the “wave” further intensifies the emotional impact.
