Tomi and Hiroshi Kubo Flashcards
Shinji’s mother’s wellbeing is affected by the mood of her son, because of her devotion. He has been morose due to his separation from Hatsue.
Her son’s unhappiness was always on her mind. (p.123)
Shinji’s mother is offended by Terukichi’s refusal to see her.
Her feeling of humiliation spurred her to a fit of passion. (p.128)
Shinji’s mother attempts to talk to Terukichi about Shinji and Hatsue’s relationship. Terukichi refuses to see her.
Because she had tried to do a good deed and failed, the mother was lonelier than ever. (p.129)
Hiroshi is spoilt.
“Can I have four rice dumplings in my lunch today? Can I, huh?” (p.35) “Please! I want four!”
Hiroshi returns to Uta-jima from his field trip to Kyoto-Osaka. Mishima lists Hiroshi’s experiences and what the mainland is like.
Those gleaming streetcars and automobiles that had come upon him so suddenly, flashed by, and disappeared, those towering buildings and neon lights that had so amazed him - where were they now? (p.96)
Hiroshi returns home after his school trip to Kyoto-Osaka. His friends tell him that Shinji had sex with Hatsue and told their mother.
The cupboard, the wall clock, his mother, his brother, the old sooty cookstove, the sea’s roaring … folded in these familiar arms, Hirsohi slept soundly. (p.97)
Hiroshi and Katchan are frightened by the roaring sound of waves, believing it to be an act of the god being “terribly angry” . So, they question the chief Sochan, for a reason for the god’s anger.
Wanting to ask the chief why the waves echoed so frighteningly, they suddenly became his two loyal braves … in a movie … “It is because of an immorality … I mean what your brother Shinji did to Miyata’s daughter Hatsue - I mean omeko” (pp.98-100)
Hiroshi finds out the gossip about Shinji and Hatsue doing omeko, or making love, from his friend Sochan.
In a fit of rage Hiroshi went flying at Sochan. (p.100)
