Tom Sawyer Flashcards
Mary: Walter!
How are you, Walt? Evening Joe. Goodby, Miss Mary. See you tonight at choir practise?
Walter: Yes Professor Greys Anatomy. I saw some calls for you on the slate
Ill take a look at them.
First line to Joe
Been having words with Walter Potter, eh?
Joe: Hed better look out what he says to me. I got a long score to settle with him, one of these days.
Hows his father today, thirsty?
Joe: Dry as a bone.
You better let him have what he wants.
Joe: All right, if you say so.
Heres a couple of dollars
Joe: This ain’t enough - I want more - I want five dollars
Look here, Joe. You might as well know right now, you can’t bleed me.
Joe: Bleed you? If you want your dirty work done, you’ve got to pay
Dirty work!
Joe: Bah! I know what youre up to. You think Walts got a chance with Mary Rogers and you want me to keep his father drunk, and disgrace him so shell throw Walt over. All right but youve got to pay. This aint enough- no, nor five aint enough. Youd better make it ten or i’ll talk.
Talk, eh? Well, thats all youll get from me, and mind you, keep a close tongue in your head or ill have you horsewhipped for a slanderer, as I had you horsewhipped once for a thief.
Joe: Horsewhipped! Thats what he threatened. I wont take it. By God, do you think ive forgot? It aint safe for you to remind me of the cut of that whip
Not safe, eh?
Joe: No, not safe!
Well, Im going to speak to Sheriff Jones about you. You cant blackmail me. Whod take your word against mine? Dont let me see you hanging around my place again, or ill have you lodged in jail. Im done with you.
Meeting Mary and Walter before Church
I was just going for you Mary (pause) I didn’t know you had other company
Walter: Father! Havent you any shame?
Looks as if Walter had his hands full
leave church
Come! Hes too drunk to know what youre saying.
Muff: Drunk! Who says im drunk
I say youre drunk.
Muff: I got to speak to him! He aint got no right to call names. Here, Doc, lemme tell you something. I dont want you to go trying to take Walts girl away from him. It aint right.
Get out of mu way, you drunken loafer! Get out of my way or ill-
Muff: Hold on, there, Doc. I reckon you dont own this street! Dont you call no names. I aint too old to make you wish you hadn’t - and I can prove it too.
Dont you threaten me, you miserable sot!
Trips on muff
Whos this?
Muff: That you Walt?
Oh, its you, is it? Sleeping off your drunk on my steps! I dont want you loitering here. Move, now! Move, I tell you!
Muff: Say, Doc Hold on- wait a minute. Theres something I wanted to say to you
I havent any time to waste with you! Take yourself off!
Muff: Say, Doc, I got to speak to you. Its about Mary Rogers and my boy
Whats that you say?
Muff: Joe says youre trying to take Mary Rogers away from Walt. He says youve been giving him money to do it.
Its a lie! Joe’ll take it back or ill have hum horsewhipped and run out of town.
Muff: Here, now! Don’t you talk like that about my pard. I wont take it off’n you.
Drop that knife. Ill have you both jailed in the morning. You cant come round here threatening me! By God, you can’t!
