Shi-no-ko-sho
What does shi-ko-no-sho stand for ?
Samurai, farmer, artisan, merchant arranged in order of social status importance
What was the social status in order from important to not?
Emperor

What is the emperors job?
The emperor held the highest status so respected he was almost worshipped as a descendant of a god though he had very little power
What was the role of the shogun
The effective ruler of Japan from 1185 to 1867 tasked with distributing land.
What was the shogun’s government called
Bakufu and was responsible for warfare and policing
What was the role of the daimyo
They were the regional landowners there was 257 of them.
What was alternate attendance
When the shogun made the daimyos come back to Edo every 2 years. If they didn’t do this the shogun would hurt their families
What was the role of the samurai
Warriors that were loyal to their daimyo
What did the samurais wear?
Plain, dark clothing
What was the role of the peasants
90% of the Japanese population most were farmers but could also be fisherman, woodcutters and more.
Why were farmers viewed as more important than merchants and artisans
As they farmed the food and no one could survive without that. Life was harsh but they had resoect
What was the role of the artisans
They made materials from things. (Weapons, furniture)
What was the role of the merchant?
They sold materials that the artisans made, sold rice, and made money from charging interest on money they had loaned.
Why were merchants at the bottom of the social status
They did not make anything so even though they made more money they had the least amount of respect from anyone else
