Ambiguity
State of inexactness. Language that is open to more than one interpretation.
Connotation
Idea invoked by a word in addition to its literal meaning.
Annotation
The literal meaning of a word.
Linguistic Determinism
Idea that language determines our thoughts and sets boundaries.
Sapir Whorf hypothesis
Language shapes a person’s perspective of the world.
Figurative Language
Language that signifies more that the literal meaning, through the use of comparisons such as metaphors or similes.
Sarcasm
Mockery using irony.
Irony
Expression of a meaning using language that signifies the opposite.
Knowledge Claim or Premise
The basis of an argument. An assumption or information available.
Inductive Reasoning
Going from specific to general statements.
Deductive Reasoning
Going from general to specific statements
Syllogism
The use of 2 premises to form a conclusion
Rationalism
Being realistic.
Confirmation Bias
Approving of a previously known fact, by confirming it.
Superstition
Belief in supernatural ideas.
Pseudoscience
Claim or belief shown/presented as science but is actually not ordinary or scientific.
Conscience
A person’s personal ideas and senses of right or wrong.
Acquaintances
Extensive knowledge or knowing of something/someone.
Empathy
The understanding and sharing the feelings of another person.
Emotional Proximity:
The understanding or sharing of a similar emotional state.
Introspection
Reflection on one’s own feelings and emotions.
