TOF mass spectroscopy Flashcards
1
Q
What are the stages in TOF mass spectroscopy
A
- Ionisation
- acceleration
- flight tube
- detection
2
Q
What’s involved within the first stage, ionisation
A
- Electron impact
- Electrospray
- Both produce a + ion
3
Q
What’s involved within the second stage, acceleration
A
- The + ions is accelerated/fired in between 2 negatively charged plates
4
Q
What’s involved in the third stage, flight tube
A
its mass determines how fast it travels the flight tube
5
Q
What’s involved in the fourth step, detection
A
The ion hits the negative plate at the end and therefore becomes discharged
6
Q
What are the two types of ionisation
A
Electron impact ionisation
Electrospray ionisation
7
Q
What are the steps in electron impact ionisation
A
- Sample is vaporised
- High energy e- fired at the sample by and electron gun —> knocks off 1 e- forming a 1+ ion
X(g) + e- —-> X^+ (g) + 2e-
8
Q
What are the steps in electrospray ionisation
A
- Sample is dissolved in volatile solvent (water or methanol)
- Then it is injected through a fine hypodermic needle to give a mist
- Tip of needle is attached to a positive terminal of a high - voltage power supply
- Particles ionised by gaining 1 H+ ion
- Solvent evaporates
X(g) + H+ —-> XH+ (g)
