California becomes the 31st state.
After a rancorous debate between slave state and free soil advocates, congress finally accepted California as a free labor state under the compromise of 1850, beginning the state’s long reign as the most powerful economic and political force in the west.

Andrew Jackson shuts down Second Bank of the US.
Jackson announces the government will no longer use the Second bank of the US. He used his executive power to remove all federal funds from the bank, in the final salvo of what is referred to the “Bank War.”

The continental Congress appoints John Adams to Travel to France as minister plenipotentiary in charge of negotiating treaties of peace and commerce with Great Britain during the Revolutionary war.
