TMJ Flashcards
Type of joint
synovial (sliding-ginglymoid) joint
Development
Meckel’s cartilage with mandible
1st branchial arch
Condylar cartilage appears @ 12th week
Characteristics
filled with synovial fluid
covered by fibrous capsule
between condylar head (mandible) and mandibular fossa
Parts of TMJ
articular eminence
articular fossa
articular disc
condylar
capsule
ligaments
synovial lining
Articular eminence
inferior of zygomatic process
lateral: articular tubercle
Articular fossa
a depression anterior to EAM
anterior: articular eminence
posterior: posterior glenoid tubercle
Articular disc
fibrous, saddle shaped, separates condyle & temporal bone
Meniscus: anterior and posterior band (thick) separated by intermediate zone (thin)
Functions of articular disc
divides superior and inferior compartments
increases stability of joint
protect articular surface
shock absorption
helps for joint movements
Capsule
fibrous membrane (surrounds joint)
attaches to: articular eminence, articular disc & neck of mandibular condyle
Synovial lining
outer fibrous layer & inner synovial lining
except at articular eminence, articular fossa, articular disc, condyle and fibrocartilage
Synovial fluid
produced by synovial lining
healthy TMJ, little amount of fluid
hyaluronic acid - slippery/viscousity of fluid
lubricin - lubrication of joint
Functions of synovial fluid
reduce friction
nutrition to non-vascularised tissue and disc
remove debris from joint space
TMJ ligaments
temporomandibular ligament
collateral ligaments
capsular ligament
stylomandibular
sphenomandibular
Arterial supplies
ECA
superficial temporal
deep auricular
ascending pharyngeal
maxillary
Nerve supplies
auriculotemporal
masseteric (branches of mandibular nerve)
