Titration Prac Flashcards
What is the proper process to wash a pipette/burette
First wash with DISTILLED water, then wash with the chemical that will be going inside of the pipette/burette
What type of technique is a titration, destructive or constructive?
Destructive, this is because after reacting the reactants are no longer usable
Why is the scale on the burette different to most others?
It starts at 50ml and ends at 0, this is because it measures the volume leaving the burette.
Is the volume of the burette read from the top or the bottom of the meniscus?
It should always be measured from the bottom of the meniscus.
How is a titration flask cleaned?
Only ever with distilled water.
What are other names for the titration flask?
Erlenmeyer Flask/Conical Flask
How is a pipette filled?
It is filled till the solution is above the graduation line
How is a pipette emptied?
The pipette is emptied till the bottom of the meniscus just touches the graduation line.
What is the difference between the equivalence point and the end point?
The equivalence point is the point in which to chemicals have been added in their mole ratios.
The end point is the point in which the indicator has JUST changed colour permanently.
Why is the first Titre volume always discounted when calculating the average?
Because the first titre is usually a rough estimate.
Which solution is placed in the burette and which is placed in the Erlenmeyer flask?
Which ever is easier to measure, it depends, for example phenolphthalein indicator turns pink in the presence of a base and is clear in the presence of acid, so it makes sense to put the acid in the Erlenmeyer flask and the base in the burette.
What is the proper procedure to perform an acid - base titration?
- Rinse Erlenmeyer Flask with distilled water
- Rinse burette with distilled water and its respective solution using a clean funnel
- Rinse burette with distilled water and its respective solution using a clean funnel
- Pipette solution into Erlenmeyer Flask
- Add 2 - 3 drops of indicator
- Place other solution into burette
- Record Initial volume
- Begin to titrate
- Observe as indicator turns different color
- Turn stopcock to stop flow of solution
- Record results
- Repeat steps, but with more presicion
