titration Flashcards

1
Q

how do you make a standard solution?

A
  1. Weigh the sample bottle containing the solid on a balance.
  2. Transfer solid to beaker and reweigh sample bottle.
  3. Record the difference in mass.
  4. Add distilled water and stir with a glass rod until all the solid has dissolved.
  5. Transfer to a volumetric flask with washings.
  6. Make up to the 250cm3 mark with distilled water.
  7. Shake flask.

Q

how do you reduce uncertainty in measuring the mass?

A

use a more accurate balance, or use a larger mass, or weight the boat fist without any content then the boat and content and subtract from each other.

Q

how do you set up the burette for a titration?

A

pour approximately 100cm^3 of the standard solution into a beaker.
rinse the burette with some of the standard solution then fill the burette with the standard solution.

Q

How do you set up the conical flask for a titration?

A

Pour around 100cm^3 of the unknown concentration into a second beaker.
Rinse the 25cm^3 pipette with some of the unknown concentration solution. then fill the 25cm^3 pipette with the solution and transfer it into the 250cm^3 conical flask. Add phenolphthalein indicator and note the initial colour.

Q

How do you take the titration readings?

A

Take an initial reading of the burette, titrate until the solution in the conical flask has a permanent colour change then take another reading of the burette. take initial from the final. repeat until you get concordant results.

9
Q

How would you reduce uncertainty?

A

make the titre volume larger. this can be done by increasing the volume and concentration of the substance in the conical flask.
Or by decreasing the concentration of the substance in the burette.
