What are the OT meanings of the Messiah?

  1. presumed to defeat the Romans & re-establish David’s throne
  2. the promoter of the Jewish law
  3. a destroyer who judges the enemies of the Jews (in particular, the Romans)
  4. the bringer of universal peace
  5. the carer of God’s chosen people - the Jews

What occurrences does the Messiah make in the NT (examples)?

A
  1. Mark 1:40-45: Jesus heals a man with leprosy. People with leprosy were ignored in society because they were considered unclean. Jesus reaches out his hand & touches him - immediately the man is healed. Jesus strongly commanded him not to tell anyone what had happened.
  2. Mark 10:46-52: Jesus heals a blind man who was calling him “Son of David”. Jesus didn’t warn the blind man not to reveal his identity. By this stage he was on his way to Jerusalem, heading to his death.
  3. Mark 11:1-11: Jesus is heading into Jerusalem on a donkey, a week before his death. The crowds welcome him into Jerusalem shouting, “Hosanna to Son of David”.
