Q

What is the purpose of a tight junction?

A

To keep cell polarity and seals the cell so nothing can get out. Appears high up in the cell

Q

What is the purpose of an adherent?

A

Prevents cell seperation from tension forces like in contractions. More basally located and has plaques of layer of proteins on the inside of the cell to join actin to adherin

Q

What is the purpose of the desmosome?

A

Links cell surface to keratin (intermediate filament) and binds muscle cells. Is a lateral wall.

Q

What is a gap junction?

A

A direct connection between cells. Allows small molecules through, and found mainly in the heart for coordinated communication

Q

What is the basement membrane?

A

The exchange of wastes and nutrients diffuses from vessels in connective tissues. Composed of basal lamina and reticular lamina

16
Q

What does squamous look like?

A

flat and thin

17
Q

What does cuboidal look like?

A

As tall as they are wide

18
Q

What does columnar look like?

A

More tall than wide

19
Q

What does transitional look like?

A

Changes shape from cuboidal to flat

20
Q

What is simple squamous epithelium used for?

A

Filtration

21
Q

What is simple cuboidal used for?

A

Secretion and absorption (cuboidal or hexagonal)

22
Q

What is simple columnar used for?

A

Protection

23
Q

What is stratified squamous used for?

A

Protection, and apical cells packed with keratin so the surface is strong.

24
Q

What is pseudostratified columnar used for?

A

Protection and transportation

25
Q

What does glandular epithelia do?

A

As a single cell group, or a group of cells, they secrete substances into ducts, onto a surface, or into blood.

26
Q

Where do endocrine glands secrete?

A

Into blood through interstitial fluid

27
Q

Where do exocrine glands secrete?

A

Into ducts that empty onto the surface of a covering or lining of epithelium (like sweat)

28
Q

What do connective tissues do?

A

Bind, support, and strengthen other body tissues. It also acts as a major transport system of the body, and of stored energy reserves

29
Q

Where are connective tissues found?

A

In the vascular system
