Tissues of the body Flashcards
Skeletal muscle
voluntary control, striated
Cardiac muscle
Involuntary control, striated
Smooth muscle
Walls of blood vessels, eyes; involuntary control, non-striated/smooth
Common histological stain
haematoxylin - blue/purple - stains nucleus
eosin - pink - stains cytoplasm
Stratified epithelium vs simple
Stratified usually occurs with the function of protection (either from mechanical/abrasion or infection)
Simple usually occurs with the function of absorption, transport etc.
Types of connective tissue
Loose - many cells, not many fibres - e.g. lamina propria (ALWAYS found under epithelium)
Dense - cells and lots of fibres, arranged either parallel (regular e.g. tendon) or randomly (irregular e.g. dermis)
Specialised - e.g. bone and cartilage
Myofibrils
found in the cytoplasm of muscle fibres
composed of myofilaments
myofilamens = actin and myosin
general arrangement of tissues - 4 layers
- skin (epidermis)
- subcutaneous (loose connective tissue, with adipose for insulation and shock absorption)
- Deep fascia (dense, inelastic connective tissue, creates muscle compartments, forms restraining bands for tendons)
- area deep to fascia (bones, muscles)
fibrous septum
loose connective tissue which connects skin to deep fascia (runs through subcutaneous)
there are fewer on back of hand (allows skin to stretch)
