Tissues and Structures of the Body Flashcards
Bone
Living tissue that makes up the body’s skeleton
Joint
The areas where 2 or more bones meet
Muscle
A bundle of long slender cells (muscle fibers) that have the power to contract and hence to produce movement
Fascia
Internal connective tissue that wraps around organs, providing support and holding parts together
Tendon
A fibrous connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
Ligament
The fibrous connective tissue that connects bones to other bones
Cartilage
A strong, flexible connective tissue that is found in various parts of the body, including the joints, the outer ear, and the larynx
Bursae
A bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac within your body that lies near bony prominences and joints. The bursa acts as a cushion between muscles, ligaments, and bones and allows structures to glide and slide past one another with ease and with minimal friction
Nerves
A nerve is an enclosed, cable-like bundle of fibers (called axons) in the peripheral nervous system. A nerve transmits electrical impulses
