Tissues and Skin Flashcards
What are the tissues types which make up the integumentary system?
Epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
Describe epithelial tissue
Covers most internal and external organs
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
Protection - epidermis of the skin
Sensory - skin eyes and ears
Secretion - substances such as enzymes and hormones
Absorption - nutrients from the digestive system
Excretion - waste products
What is connective tissue
Most abundant and widely distributed tissue
What is the function of connective tissue?
- Binds tissues and organs together
- Supports organs in their location
- Storage site for nutrients
Describe muscle tissue
Enables voluntary and involuntary movement
Describe nervous tissue
Highly specialised cells that receive and transmit electrical impulses
Describe the Membranes?
- Thin like structures that cover and protect surfaces and interiors of the body
- Divide into epithelial and connective membranes
Describe epithelial membranes
Cutaneous - cover body surfaces that are exposed to external environment
Mucous - line body cavities that open to exterior
Serous - line body cavities that do not open to the exterior
What forms the integumentary system?
Skin, hair, nails, glands, blood vessels, muscles and nervous
What layers make up the Integumentary system?
Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis
What does the dermis contain?
Sebaceous glands, dermal arterioles, hair follicles
Three pigments that affect skin colour
Melanin, carotene and haemoglobin
Functions of the skin
Protection, sensory, excretion, vitamin D synthesis, stores blood, temperature regulation
Which layer of the skin is composed of connective tissue?
Dermis
The layer of the skin that is composed of epithelial tissue is the:
Epidermis
What is produced by the sebaceous glands to moisten and softens skin?
Sebum
Sensory neurons that detect touch, vibration, tickle, heat, cold and pain are located in which layer of the skin?
Dermis
The portion of hair that is responsible for its growth is
Matrix
The hypodermis (subcutaneous layer) consists of
areolar and adipose tissue
Which layer of skin has no blood vessels
Epidermis
Which layer of the skin functions as a blood reservoir
dermis
What is the epidermis made up of?
Stratified squamous epithelial tissue
What is your skin responsible for?
Your skin protects your body against infections and extreme temperatures, maintains your balance of fluid and synthesis vitamin D for your own personal use
What do melanocyte do and where are they located?
Located in the epidermis and responsible for the synthesis of melanin, the pigment which gives skin its colour
What are Langerhans cells and where are they located?
Located in the epidermis and responsible for ingesting the unwanted invaders
What are Merkel cells and where are they located
Located down at the boundary between the epidermis and dermis where they combined with nerve ending to create a sensory receptor for touch
What are the layers in the epidermis?
stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum and stratum basale layer (CLGSB)
What are the layers of the dermis?
Papillary layer, reticular layer, hypodermis
