Tissues and Skin Flashcards
What are the tissues types which make up the integumentary system?
Epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
Describe epithelial tissue
Covers most internal and external organs
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
Protection - epidermis of the skin
Sensory - skin eyes and ears
Secretion - substances such as enzymes and hormones
Absorption - nutrients from the digestive system
Excretion - waste products
What is connective tissue
Most abundant and widely distributed tissue
What is the function of connective tissue?
- Binds tissues and organs together
- Supports organs in their location
- Storage site for nutrients
Describe muscle tissue
Enables voluntary and involuntary movement
Describe nervous tissue
Highly specialised cells that receive and transmit electrical impulses
Describe the Membranes?
- Thin like structures that cover and protect surfaces and interiors of the body
- Divide into epithelial and connective membranes
Describe epithelial membranes
Cutaneous - cover body surfaces that are exposed to external environment
Mucous - line body cavities that open to exterior
Serous - line body cavities that do not open to the exterior
What forms the integumentary system?
Skin, hair, nails, glands, blood vessels, muscles and nervous
What layers make up the Integumentary system?
Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis
What does the dermis contain?
Sebaceous glands, dermal arterioles, hair follicles
Three pigments that affect skin colour
Melanin, carotene and haemoglobin
Functions of the skin
Protection, sensory, excretion, vitamin D synthesis, stores blood, temperature regulation
Which layer of the skin is composed of connective tissue?
Dermis
