Tissues and membranes Flashcards
Epithelial tissue
protects the body by covering internal and external surfaces. secretes digestive enzymes, hormones and sweat
Squamous epithelial cells
Flat irregularly shaped. line the heart, blood and lymphatic vessels
Cuboidal epithelial cells
cube shaped cells line the kidney tubules and cover the ovaries and secretory parts of glands
Columnar epithelial cells
elongated cells with the nucleus near the bottom. line the ducts, digestive tract, part of the respiratory track and glands
Glandular/ Secretory tissue
columnar or cuboidal shaped specialized to secrete materials. Endocrine and Exocrine gland cells
Endocrine cells
these cells form ductless glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream
Exocrine cells
these cells secrete their substance into ducts
Connective tissue
connects organs and tissue allowing for movement and provides support for other tissues
Adipose tissue
stores fat, acts as filler tissue, cushions supports and insulates the body
Areolar tissue
surrounds various organs and supports both nerve cells and blood vessels
Dense fibrous tissue
forms ligaments, tendons, aponeuroses, and fasciae
Tissues
cells grouped together
muscle tissue
contains cell material that has the ability to contract and move the body. Contractability
nervous tissue
contains cells that react to stimuli and conduct an impulse
supportive tissue
osseous, cartilage and hyaline
osseous tissue
comprises the skeleton of the body, supports and protects underlying tissue parts and organs, serves as attachment points for skeletal muscles
cartilage
provides firm and flexible support for the embryonic skeleton and parts of the adult skeleton
hyaline cartilage
forms the skeleton of the embryo
fibrocartilage
strong, flexible, supportive substances found between bones
elastic cartilage
intercellular matrix is embedded with a network of elastic fibers and is firm but flexible.
Vascular tissue
blood. transports nutrients and oxygen molecules to cells, and metabolic waste away from cells
lymph
transports tissue fluids, proteins, fats and other materials from the tissues to the circulatory system
cardiac muscle cells
have the ability to contract to enable the heart to pump blood
skeletal muscle
striated muscle. attached to the movable parts of the skeleton. Allow for voluntary movement
smooth muscle
nonstriated muscle. provide for involuntary movement.
striated
having transverse bands that run down the length of muscle fibers
nervous tissue
have the ability to react to stimuli. irritability and conductivity
irritability
ability of nerve tissue to respond to environmental changes
conductivity
ability to carry a nerve impulse
