Tissues and Membranes Flashcards
Types of tissues
Muscle, connective, epithelial and nervous
Muscle tissue
Excitable, responding to stimulation and contracting to provide movement
Three major types of muscle tissue
Smooth, cardiac and skeletal
Connective tissue
Binds cells and organs of the body together and functions in protection, support and integration of all parts of the body
Epithelial
Sheets of cells that cover exterior surfaces of the body, line internal cavity and passageways and form certain glands
Nervous
Excitable, allowing for propagation and electrochemical signals in the form of nerve impulses that communicate between different body regions
Types of germ layers
Ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm
Ectoderm
Gives rise to epidermis, glands on skin, some cranial bones, pituitary and adrenal medulla, the nervous system, the mouth between check and gums, the anus
Mesoderm
Gives rise to connective tissue proper, bone, cartilage, blood, endothelium of blood vessels, muscle, synovial membranes, serous membranes lining body cavities, kidneys and lining of gonads
Endoderm
Lining of airways and digestive system except the mouth and distal part of digestive system (rectum and anal canal); glands (digestive glands, endocrine glands, adrenal cortex)
What special ability do embryonic cells possess?
The ability to differentiate into any type of cell in the body (I.e. totipotent)
Types of connective tissue proper
Loose and dense connective tissue
Types of loose connective tissue
Aerolar, adipose and reticular
Types of dense connective tissue
Dense regular, elastic and dense-irregular
Types of supportive connective tissue
Cartilage and bone
