Tissues and Integument Flashcards
Simple Squamous Epithelial
Single layer of cells, gas exchange happens in lung alveoli (lower respiratory)
Simple Cuboidal Epithelial
Single layer of squares or round cells with lumen, aids in filtering blood and making urine in kidneys
Simple columnar Epithelial
Single layer of rectangular cells, aids in nutrient absorption
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelial
Fake layer, reaches the basement membrane, cleans air coming into the lungs (upper respiratory)
Transitional Epithelial
Similar to stratified squamous, found in the bladder and tubes for urinary system
Dense Fibrous Regular Connective Tissue
Packed with collagen, Fibers are parallel and have little blood flow, found in tendons and ligaments
Loose Connective Tissue (Areolar Fibrous Tissue)
Located between epithelium tissues and blood layers, mostly random collagen fibers, attached one tissue to another tissue while giving flexibility
Epidermis
keratinized stratified epithelial tissue, aids as a barrier, protects from invaders, and maintains water balance, youngest cell in the deepest layers.
Stratum Corneum
the most superficial, protects and preserves water, 30 layers of flat dead keratinocytes, exfoliation occurs here
Stratum Lucidum
the cells here are dying and are light, found in thick skin
Stratum Granulosum
thin 3-5 keratinocytes pressed together firmly, creates an epidermal water barrier, prevents cells from above it from getting nutrients
Stratum Spinosum
Deepest layers, have little spines, blood supply not as good, phagocytes are here
Hair
tube of keratinized cells that grow from hair follicle in skin
Pilus
one individual hair
Shaft
Above skin surface (visible)
