Tissues Flashcards
What are tissues
Group of similar cells that function together to carry out specialised activities
Biopsy
Removal of sample of living tissue for staining and examination under microscope
Histology
The microscopic study of tissues
What are the 4 primary types of body tissue?
Epithelial, connective, muscle and neural
Epithelial tissue
3% of body - (skin) layer of cells; covers body surfaces, lines hollow organs, body cavities, ducts and forms glands
High rate of cell division; no blood supply
One end attached to basement membrane (basal Lamina), other end free to a space (exposed)
Connective tissue
45% of body - Widely distributed (everywhere).
Bone, fat, blood.
Protects and supports body and organs, binds organs together, stores energy as fat, provides immunity
Muscle tissue
50% of body
Neural tissue
2% of body
Epithelial tissue layers
Simple squamous etc
Learn these, fig 4.3, 4.5
table 4.1
Words ending in “blast”
immature cell; secretes matrix and can reform to mature cell
Words ending in “Cyte”
Mature cell - final form
4 types of connective tissue
Loose CT, Dense CT, Supportive CT, Liquid CT
Serous membranes
Line internal body Cavities and organs within the cavity. Secretes serous fluid, a lubricating fluid. Parietal and visceral portions. Pleura, peritoneum, pericardium.
Mucous Membranes
Line body cavities that open to exterior (mouth, stomach, intestine. Secrete mucous to lubricate and prevent drying.
Parietal
referring to the wall of cavity (cavity: fluid filled space)
Visceral
Outer covering of internal organs
Pleura
Serous membrane lining pleura cavity (cavity surrounding lungs)
Peritoneum
Serous membrane that lines peritoneal cavity (space within abdominopelvic cavity)
Pericardium
Fibrous sac that surrounds heart
Locations of systems within cavities
Dorsal cavity - Brain, spinal cord
thoracic cavity - heart, lungs some air passages
abdominal cavity (ventral Cavity) - most of digestive system
Pelvic cavity - bladder, female reproductive organs, part of large intestine
NB: viscera = body organs of abdomino pelvic cavity
Structures outside body cavities
Skeletal system, integumentary system, skeletal muscle, kidney, pancreas, testes, sense organs, peripheral nerves and blood vessels.
