tissues Flashcards
What are tissues?
Groups of SIMILAR cells working together to achieve a common function
What is histology?
The microscopic study of tissues
What are the two main components of tissues?
- Cells
- Matrix
What is the function of the matrix in tissues?
Non-living substances such as proteins, carbs, ions, and fibers that suspend cells
How many types of tissues are in the body?
4 types
What is extracellular matrix?
Substances found outside the cell membrane where cells are suspended
What are some components of the extracellular matrix?
- Extracellular fluids
- Interstitial fluid
- Blood plasma
- Cerebrospinal fluid
- Supporting fibers
- Enzymes
What are microvilli?
Microscopic finger-like extensions of the cell membrane that increase surface area for absorption
What is the function of cilia?
Causes movement of a substance over the surface of a cell
Where are flagella found in humans?
Only in sperm
What are tight junctions?
Cell binding proteins also known as ‘Glue’
What is the role of desmosomes?
Cell binding proteins that act like ‘Velcro’
What do gap junctions function as?
Channels between cells
What type of tissue covers body surfaces and lines openings?
Epithelial tissue
What is the primary function of connective tissue?
Connect two types of tissues and provide support and protection
Which type of tissue is capable of producing movement?
Muscle tissue
What is a key function of nervous tissue?
Send and receive electrochemical messages
What principle should be considered when studying tissues?
The principle of complementarity of structure and function
What factors can be compared when studying different types of tissues?
- Shape
- Layers
- Structure
- Function
- Location in the body
- Amount of matrix
- Levels of vascularity
- Levels of innervation
- Presence of special cell extensions
- Presence of fibers/types of fibers
Why is the study of tissues important in BIO 168?
It is foundational knowledge that will be referenced in every chapter moving forward
What is a visual analogy?
Pictures or images of something known that relate to a new concept
