TISSUES Flashcards
Tissues
a group of specialized cells that performs specific function
4 basic tissue types
- Epithelial (body surfaces)
- Connective (holds things together)
- Muscular (cardiac, smooth, skeletal)
- Neural (makes up nerves in the spinal cord & brain)
Epithelial tissues
One or more layers of closely associated; forms coverings and linings
Functions of epithelial tissues
- Protection (form barriers)
- control permeability
- absorption
- secretion (form glands)
- provide sensation
Characteristics of epithelial tissues
- Cells held tightly together to form barriers
- Special junction
- cells have polarity
- ## basal surface sits on a basement membrane composed of basal lamina & underlying collagen fibers
Simple (epithelial tissues)
single layer of cells (sitting on basement membrane)
Stratified (epithelial tissues)
many layers of cells (resist wear and tear)
Pseudostratified (epithelial tissues)
looks stratified, but all cells sit on basement membrane
Squamous (epithelial tissues)
flat ‘pancake like’ cells
cuboidal (epithelial tissues)
cube-shaped
columnar (epithelial tissues)
column shaped
Simple squamous
Function: diffusion & filtration
Location: line blood vessels, form alveoli & serous membranes (line body cavities)
Simple cuboidal
Functions: absorption secretion
Location: kidney tubules, ducts of some glands, surface of ovaries
Simple Columnar (simple)
functions: absorption secretion
locations: lines stomach & intestines
Simple columnar (pseudostratified ciliated)
Function: secretion, may have cilia which move mucus
location: lines respiratory tract
