Tissues Flashcards
Locations:
- air sacs of the lungs
- lining of heart
- linings of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels
Functions:
- allows materials to pass by diffusion and filtration can secrete lubrication
Tip:
- thinnest tissue in the body
- job is to allow passage of materials
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Locations:
- Surface of the ovaries
- Kidney tubules
- Ducts and secretory portions of small glands
Functions:
- Secretion and absorption of materials
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Locations:
- NONCILIATED –> lines most of the digestive tract
- CILIATED –> lines bronchi of lungs
- lines some regions of the uterus.
Functions:
- Secretion of mucus, digestive enzymes, and other substances
- Absorption of food molecules and other substances
Tip:
- same as simple cuboidal (Secretion/Absorption), but also more specific to digestive system
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Location:
- epidermis (outside layer skin)
Function:
- protects underlying tissues in body areas subjected to abrasion
Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Location:
- esophagus, mouth, vagina
Function:
- protects underlying tissues in body areas subjected to abrasion
Non-keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Location:
- CILIATED variety lines the trachea & most of the upper respiratory tract
- NONCILIATED type in male’s sperm-carrying ducts and ducts of large glands
Function:
- secrete substances (particularly mucus) - propulsion of mucus by cilia
Pseudostratified Epithelium
Location:
- Rare in the body
- small amounts in male urethra
- large ducts of some glands
Function:
- protection and secretion
Tip:
- all of the stratified (squamous/cuboidal/columnar include protection function - makes sense since there are layers of cells
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Location:
- Largest ducts of sweat glands, mammary glands, and salivary glands
Function:
- protection
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Location:
- urinary tract (lines ureters, bladder, and part of the urethra)
Function:
- stretches readily
- permits distension of urinary organs by urine
Transitional Epithelium
Location:
- Wraps and packages all organs
- Underneath the epithelial tissues (ET)
Function:
- Wraps and cushions organs
- Holds fluid
- Plays a role in inflammation
Loose (Areolar) Connective Tissue
Location:
- Tendons (muscle to bone)
- Ligaments (bone to bone)
- Sclera (white part) of eye
Function:
- Resists tension in one direction
Dense Regular Connective Tissue
Location:
- Dermis of Skin
- Joint capsules
Function:
- Able to withstand tension from many directions
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
Location:
- Bone Marrow
- Spleen
- Liver
- Lymph Nodes
Function:
- Its fibers form a soft skeleton to support cells (especially immune cells)
Reticular Connective Tissue
Location:
- Skeleton
Function:
- Protection
- Levers for muscles to pull on
- Stores Calcium
- Site of blood cell production
Compact bone (osseous) Connective Tissue
Location:
- Inside the heart, arteries, and veins
Function:
- Transport of respiratory gasses, nutrients, wastes, and other substances throughout body
Blood Connective Tissue
