Tissue Flashcards
what makes up the integumentary system?
- skin
- hair
- nails
- glands
Functions of the skin?
- protection
- eliminates waste products
- regulates body temperature/ thermoregulation
- sensation
- manufacture of vitamin D
Structure of the skin?
- outer layer called the epidermis, made of stratified squamous tissue
- inner layer called the Dermis, made of elastic fibrous connective tissue
- Epidermis overlays Dermis
What tissue is the epidermis made from?
stratified squamous tissue
What tissue is the dermis made from?
Elastic fibrous connective tissue
What is Keratin?
- a protein inside skin cells
- based in the outmost layers of skin
serves important structural and protective functions - provides skin with waterproof layer
- provides strength
- able to resist friction
Structure of Epidermis?
- inner layer = basal layer
- outer layer = corneum layer
Use of basal layer?
is where cells are produced divide and move to the outer layer
this is to replace old and dead cells removed by friction
use of corneum layer?
where cell exchange become flat packs of keratin, embedding into a lipid
Overview of skin?
- largest, heaviest and most active organ
- surface area of 1.5-2 square metres
- skin is a barrier between the individual and external environment
- skin is an indication to health
Overview of Dermis ?
- inner part of skin
- composed of fibrous connective tissue with bundles of collagen and elastic fibres that provide support, elasticity and resistance
- dermis has a blood and never supply that contains a vast network of blood and lymphatic capillaries and nerve endings
What is the dermis composed of?
composed of fibrous connective tissues
- bundles of collagen and elastic fibres
(to provide support/elasticity/resistance)
What does the dermis have that the epidermis doesn’t?
- a blood and nerve supply
- a network of blood, lymphatic capillaries and nerve endings
skins 3 layers?
- epidermis
- Dermis
- subcutaneous layer
subcutaneous layer?
- 3rd layer of skin
- made up of fat to insulate the body
