Tinting/Gel Polish Flashcards
List the steps for lash tinting.
- Cleanse the eye area with eye makeup remover to remove make-up and oils on lashes.
- Apply petroleum jelly to the bottom side of cotton pads and place under lower lashes. Ask the client to close eyes and check to make sure cotton pads are in place. - – Apply petroleum jelly to top of eyelid close to the lashes but not touching. If eyebrows are being done apply petroleum jelly around the brow area.
- In a small dish mix ¼ inch of dye with approx 10 drops of 3-10% peroxide for the lashes and only 5 drops of 3-10% peroxide for the brows. Mixture should be creamy.
- Apply tint to the eyelashes with eyes closed. With the eyebrows the tint is applied to the underneath side of hair towards the centre brow and then to the surface, shaping the brow line.
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions for the processing times.
- Remove tint from eyelashes with Q-tips. Slightly dampen the q-tip with water and continue to remove until all traces are gone. For eyebrows tint with cotton balls until all traces are gone.
- Flush eyes with water.
How long does tint last and why?
Tints will last from 3 to 6 weeks. In the summer months it will usually last approximately 3 weeks due to the sun fading tint and chlorine in pools.
How long is tint left on brows a) fine hair, b) medium hair, c) coarse or grey hair?
Eyelashes - 5 to 15 minutes
Eyebrows - Fine hair - 2 to 3 minutes
- Med hair - 3 to 5 minutes
- Coarse hair - 5 to 10 minutes
What are the contraindications to tint?
- Sunburn
- Skin infections
- Open sores
- Psoriasis
- Claustrophobic
- Allergies to tint
- Contact lenses at time of tint
- Hay fever or runny eyes at the time of tint
How is cuticle work done differently during a gel manicure?
Cuticle work is done dry, no soaking of the fingernails like you would in a regular polish manicure. This is done so that no oils or moisture remains on the nail plate which would cause the gel polish to lift.
When is the hand massage done during the gel manicure?
Hand massage is done after the application of polish to avoid any unnecessary oils/moisture on the nail plate. We want a clean, dry and dehydrated nail surface.
What is used to remove the sticky layer after the top coat is cured?
70% isopropyl alcohol is used to remove the sticky layer on the top coat.
List the steps to remove gel polish?
- Buff the glossy finish off the gel-polished nails. The “top-coat” must be “broken”, so the acetone can penetrate the gel colour and base coat. (Some brands do not require this step.)
- Soak nails in acetone. Soak cotton balls in acetone and wrap each fingernail in aluminum foil.
- Leave in for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Gently pull off the foil wrap, while “pulling” the gel polish off with it.
- Do not scrape the polish off; re-wrap and let the nail soak for more time if it does not remove easily.
- Work on one nail at a time. Exposure to air evaporates the acetone and makes removal more difficult.
Why might gel polish wrinkle?
If wrinkling occurs, polish was applied too thick, and the layer underneath has not cured fully. Always paint thinly and evenly. It’s better to have 3 thin coats than 1 or 2 thick coats.
Why might gel polish lift off the nail plate?
If lifting occurs, you may not have done sufficient cuticle work, or you may have painted the skin or cuticle. Gel will not adhere to skin and it will only work on a clean dehydrated nail plate.
How long can correctly applied gel polish last?
Gel polish applied correctly can last from 2-4 weeks.
Why should you never shake gel polish bottles?
Gel polish should not be “shaken” as this causes bubbles. Roll the gel polish bottles in your hand or stir gel polish with a metal spatula.
Why are UV lamps almost obsolete?
Most brands are switching to LED because of the longevity of the lamp. 20000+ hours, whereas UV lamps must have bulbs changed every 3 months.
Why is it recommended to use the same brand of lamp and polish together?
Using the same brand of lamp and polish is recommended because they will work best together.
What can improper curing of gel polish lead to?
Improper curing can lead to staining, lifting, adverse skin reactions and allergy.
