TIN: Week 3 Flashcards
What stain is used to visualize DNA and RNA?
Stain: Aniline dyes that stain purple or dark blue.
Mechanism: These work by ionic interaction.
What are aniline dyes?
Synthetic dyes made from analyn that can be obtained from cold tar.
Describe Luxol Fast Blue dyes:
Stains: Myelin Sheath in blue
Mechanism: ionic interaction between the dye (anion) and myelin lipoproteins (cation) which initiates binding
Indication: study of myelinated nerve tracs and changes or loss of myelin in neurodegenerative disease

What is an example of a metal impregnation stain?
Golgi Stain- not a true stain but a method of precipitation
Stains: 1-10% of neurons dark brown or black
Mechanism: silver precipitate produces insoluble black reaction to product
Indications: study of neuronal morphology (such as dendritic spines)
What are the 5 types of antibodies and which is most often an antibody reagent?
1) IgG
2) IgM
3) IgA
4) IgD
5) IgE
Most antibody reagents are IgG
