The de Montfort Parliament
-decision of the nobleman Simon de Montfort to summon commoners as well as nobles and churchman to Westminster Hall in 1265 to discuss reforms.
-generally seen as first recognisable parliament.
1689
-agreement of King William III (1689-1702) to Parliament’s Bill of Rights est the principle of parliamentary sovereignty.
1832, 1867, 1884, 1918, 1928 AND 1969
Extension of the franchise
-these parliamentary reform acts gradually extended the franchise until 1928–> principle of universal franchise was established when vote given to everyone over 21
-1969–> reduced to 18
1911 and 1949
Parliament Acts
-1911 act –> est principle that HOL (as an unelected body) could not delay, not veto, legislation that the HOC had passed
-1949–> Lords delaying power reduced to 1 year
1999
HOL Act
-all but 92 heridatry peers removed from HOL
–> Most members of the Lords are life peers –> made HOL more assertive in its dealings with the HOC
