King Alexander 3 when he falls from is horse. His granddaughter Margaret is the new Queen. She is 4 years old and lives in Norway.
1290
Margaret, the Maid of Norway, dies in Orkney on her way to Scotland to be crowned Queen.
1291
13 men claim the right to be King of Scotland. King Edward 1 of England comes to Berwick Castle to choose the next King of Scotland from the 13 claimants
1292
Edward chooses John Balliol to be the Scottish King. The Scots think John is a Toom Tabard (an empty coat).
1294
King Edward demands help from Scotland in his war with France. Scotland will not help and instead makes an agreement with France, later know as the Auld Alliance.
1296
Edward declares war on Scotland and captures Berwick-upon-Tweed. 1600 of Scotland’s leading nobles swear loyalty to Edward 1 by adding their seal to the bottom of the ´Ragman’s Roll’, a document promising their loyalty to Edward 1. King John abdicates.
1297
William Wallace kills the English Sherriff of Lanark. Wallace and Andrew de Moray lead their armies against the English. They defeat the English army at Stirling.
1298
Edward brings an army to Scotland to fight the Scots. William Wallace is defeated at the Battle of Falkirk.
1305
Wallace is captured and sent to London for trial. He is executed.
1306
Robert the Bruce begins to lead the Scot’s against Edward. Robert quarrels with Balliol’s nephew, John Comyn, at Dumfries. Comyn is killed. Bruce is secretly crowned King.
1307
Edward 1 dies. Edward 2 is King of England. Bruce and his army capture castles from the English around Scotland. King Robert the Bruce has the support of much of Scotland
1314
The Scots defeat the English at the Battle of Bannockburn and regain freedom
1320
The Declaration of Abroath is sent to the Pope
1324
The Pope recognises Bruce’s title as King of Scotland
1327
Edward 3 comes to the throne of England
