the narrator begins the book by describing the state of the earth and mars at this time. mars has been observing earth for years while earth has been unaware, proving the martians must be superiorly intelligent compared to humans, despite the previous understaning that humans were the most intelligent life force. criticising the hubris of man

the narrator recalls the night that the first ‘star’ fell, and although he was in the ‘lab’ and saw it, he does not investigate. ogilvy does, and believes there to be humans inside (arrogance) and after informing anyone who would listen, a small crowd gathers the next morning

the narrator critically and in a classist manner observes those around the pit. he does not believe anyone to be able to survive the crash, and thus goes home. he returns in the afternoon where there is a larger crowd and working men. he is asked to go to inform the lord

the crowd begins to jostle, and a man is pushed into the pit. the martian exits and is greeted by horror due to it’s disturbing appearance. much of the crowd arrives but the shopkeeper is killed by the martian.

the narrator admits he does not understand the technology of the martians. he describes that there is roughly 50 dead from the heat-rays. the chapter ends with a panicked stampede which kills women and children

the narrator feels troubled while he returns home, and encounters people laughing about the possibility of martians. he tells his wife about the whole thing and has dinner while reflecting upon his thought that the military would be able to defeat the martians with a shell
