1896 July 7th
First game of volleyball was played at Springfield college.
1895
William G. Morgan, an instructor at YMCA in Holyoke mass. Decided to blend basketball, baseball, tennis and handball to create a game for his classes of business men and created volleyball. It was called mintonette then.
Name changed to volleyball when someone told him that the layers seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth.
1900
Specific ball was created for the game.
1916 Philippines
Set and spike were introduced. (Offensive style of passing the ball in high trajectory to be struck by another player)
1917
Game was changed from 21 pts. To 15 pts. (Now it’s 25 pts.)
1920
Three hits per side, back row attacks were instituted.
1922
First YMCA national championships were held in Brooklyn New York 27 teams from 11 states were represented.
1928
The USBVA now known as USA volleyball was formed.
1930
The first two man beach ball game was played.
1934
The first approval and recognition of the volleyball referees.
1964
Volleyball was introduced as an Olympic game in Tokyo.
1977
The US national mens team began a year round training regime in Dayton Ohio. (Moved to San Diego, CA in 1981).
1975
National women’s team began a year round training regime in Pasadena Texas ( Colorado Springs in 1979, coto de caza and fountain valley, CA in 1981)
1984
The US won their first medals in the Olympics in Los Angeles men own gold, women won silver.
1988-1990
Men repeated the gold in Korea. World league was created.
