Soviet troops occupy Manchuria (China)
Mao flies to meet Kai-sheik for peace under American auspices
Mao and Chiang reach agreement but fighting between Communists and Nationalists intensifies
1946
Ceasefire (previously agreed) breaks down and civil war begins
1948
Communist forces capture Manchuria
1949
Communists defeat nationalists and establish the People’s Republic of China (PRC)

Start of Korean war
New marriage law gives more legal protection to women
Suppression of counter revolutionaries begins
1951
Three-Antis campaign begins to eradicate corruption among party officials. It’s official targets were corruption, waste and obstructionist bureaucracy

Five antis campaign is launched to eradicate corruption among businessmen and mainly the bourgeoisie. It’s targets were bribery, tax evasion, theft of state property, cheating on government contracts and economic espionage.
Any political parties other than CPC are banned

Launch of first 5 year plan for industry
Purge of Geo Gang and Rao Shushi from the party leadership
1955
‘Higher-stage’ Agricultural Producers’ Cooperatives mark a decisive shift towards collectivisation of agriculture

Hundred Flowers campaign encourages intellectuals to criticise the party followed by an anti-Rightist purge of intellectuals
1958
Mao launches the Great Leap Forward (Second Five Year Plan for industry)
1959
Purge of Peng Dehuai from party leadership

Launch of 3rd 5 year plan for industry
Start of power struggle between Mao and Liu Shaoqi/ Deng Xiaoping
Launch of the Little Red Book quotations by Chairman Mao
1963
Launch of socialist education movement to spread Mao’s ideas and purge the party
1964
China successfully tests its firsts atomic bomb
1966
Mao launches the Cultural Revolution
1967
January revolution in Shanghai results in the overthrow of Party Leadership by Red Guards. This is followed by February Crackdown in which PLA starts to suppress red guard violence
1969
Cultural Revolution is officially declared to be over by Party Congress
1971
Line Bao dies in an air crash after an unsuccessful attempt at a coup
1972
American President Richard Nixon visits China to begin process of restoring normal relations between the two powers.
1973
Anti-Confucius campaign is launched by the Gang of Four
1976
Jan- death of Zhou Enlai
Apr- demonstrations against gang of four in Tianamen Square
