Time Signature Flashcards
Define a measure.
Sometimes known as a bar, a measure is a segment of music contained within two vertical lines.
What is the downbeat?
The first beat of a measure.
What indicates a simple time signature?
The beat of a piece of music can be broken down into two-part rhythms.
What indicates a compound time signature?
The beat is broken down into three-part rhythms.
When writing notes in simple time, what is the rule when a beat has more than one note?
The notes will be grouped together by a beam.
If the numerator in a time signature is not divisible by 3 (except if it is 3), is it simple or compound?
Simple
True or False: In simple time, a slightly stronger accent is placed on the first beat of each measure.
True
How do you determine duple, triple, or quadruple meter?
The amount of beats in a measure, i.e. duple = 2 beats, triple = 3 beats, quadruple = 4 beats.
Define Syncopation.
A deliberate disruption of the two/three beat stress pattern in which the off-beat receives the accent.
Define triplet.
A three-note pattern that fills the duration of a typical two-note pattern
Define duplet.
A two-note pattern that fills the space of a typical three-note pattern.
