Group which believed that the Jewish society is so corrupt that the right thing to so is withdraw from society and set an isolated community devoted to observing the will of God
Essenes
A party which collaborated with the family of Herod for political and material benefits.
Herodians
A group which believed that devotion to God must mean being willing to fight and die for their faith and take up arms against the Romans
Revolutionaries
Composed of political leaders and Jewish elite who collaborated with the Romans thus retaining their position and privilege.
Sadducees
Inhabitants of Samaria, the descendants of people who intermarried with non Israelites and therefore developed as a different religion from Judaism. Despised by Jews from Judah.
Samaritans
This group were the descendant of the “pious ones” who believed that practicing the law as perfectly as they is God’s will and doing so will pave the way for God to liberate them from Roman oppression.
Pharisees
Professional class, experts of the law, respected and called Rabbi by the people.
Scribes
A group of revolutionaries who carried a dagger ready to strike and kill Romans.
Sicarii
Composed of 70 leaders who regularly meet, the highest governing body of the Jews.
Sanhedrin
Ordinary Jews, whose main preoccupation is to survive. They may be ignorant of the finer points of the law, and therefore may not be so meticulous in observing it.
People of the Land
A zealous Jewish priest who started the revolt against the tyrannical Greek rulers, under the leadership of his sons Jews won relative independence from the Syrian Greeks.
